Setting: Tris comes from the Winter Kingdoms, a land steeped in magic and governed by religion.
The religion of the Winter Kingdoms is based on worship of the One Goddess of Many Faces, who is referred to by many names, including the Lady and the Light/Dark Goddess. The later of these names are derived from the eight aspects or faces of the Godess – four light (the Mother, the Lover, the Avenger and the Childe) and four dark (the Crone, the Whore, the demon Goddess and the Formless One). Each of the nations of the Winter Kingdoms worships one or more of the aspects of the Goddess and religion can shape the nature of the Kingdoms.
The magic possessed by folk in this world is said to come from the Goddess. Generally, magic is divided into Light and Dark magic, both of which can take many forms. Most notable manifestations of magic are in healers, fire mages and Summoners. The later of these is the most powerful form of magic, which allows the mage to interact with the dead and undead. There is also a dark kind of magic which allows a mage to summon demons and apparitions to destroy their enemies. People can possess differing levels of magic, some users may only be able to cast minor spells or scry, while others have a wealth of magic available to them. The demographic of magic users changes over the ages, for example in the current age, Tris is the only Summoner, but in the past there have been many of differing levels.
Bava K’aa was the greatest Summoner in history and fought alongside King Argus to defeat the Obsidian King, an evil and powerful sorcerer, during the Mage Wars. The defeated Obsidian King is now contained within the Soulcatcher, as Bava K’aa could not bring herself to destroy him because he possessed her beloved. Bava K’aa was also the leader of the Sisterhood, a collective of female mages from across the entirety of the Kingdoms which once aided with their magic, but now believe they should simply observe and interfere only when necessary.
Aside from the living and the dead, another people exist in the Winter Kingdoms. The Vayash Moru are essentially vampires. They are an old race of creatures which require blood to survive. They possess a number of abilities including being able to move fast and levitate and many are mages. They are largely close allies of the Sisterhood, but are feared across the lands for their nature. Foor Arontala is a Vayash Moru who betrayed his own kind and plans to release the Obsidian King in order to gain the power of a Summoner.
The Winter Kingdoms are divided into a number of nations, the most important to Tris’s story are the Kingdoms of Margolan and Isencroft and the Sovereignty of Principality.
Prior to the beginning of Tris’s story, the Kingdom of Margolan was ruled from the castle of Shekerishet by King Bricen and Queen Serae. However, they were killed and replaced by their son Jared on the night of the Feast of the Departed. On this night, a nation’s preferred worship (in this case primarily the Mother and Childe) gives way to worship of the Crone and to the dead – it is a night on which the veil between the realm of the living and the spirit plane is thin and so even those who are not mageborn can see and converse with ghosts. The City of Ghorbal within Margolan, is a hub for traders and contraband is often smuggled from here into nations such as Nargi where alcohols is banned and silks not needed as the woman are placed in Cloisters.
To the West of Margolan is the Kingdom of Isencroft. This is a nation which worships the Warrior aspect of the Goddess and has a proud yet strict defence principle. Every woman and man within the nation, no matter the age, is required to learn to defend themselves and become adept swordsmen – it is said that to be of Isencroft is to be a swordsman. Each person, even those of noble and royal birth are required to perform a stint in the army.
To the East is the Sovereignty of Principality. This nation which mainly worships the Lover aspect, is a young nation at only 300 years old. The lands of Principality are rich in gold mines and were divided as spoils of war between Margolan, Eastmark and Dhasson prior to it gaining independence. Principality, while having a small military force, is home to many mercenary groups which have not sworn loyalty to the state, but they’ve have sworn to never be hired for jobs which would be detrimental to Principality. These groups are paid in the gold from the land’s mines when an army is required. Principality is also home to Westmarch, where the Library of the Sisterhood stands.
The Library at Westmarch, which was apparently destroyed during the Mage Wars, is actually hidden from sight and only the most trusted of the Sisterhood are allowed entry. This is because following the events of the Mage War, in which the mages of the land were split and fought over the nature of the use of magic, over whether it should be used for the good of all or for their own causes, it was believed safer to hide the knowledge within the library.
The other nations of the Winter Kingdoms are: Trevath, frequent rival of Margolan known for its worship of the Crone, it’s mines and it’s trade in fine carpets; Eastmark, infamous for gambling and mercenaries and home to a large number of wealthy markets; the Kingdom of Nargi, which is controlled by the priests of the Crone and holds on to the superstitions of older ways including blood sacrifice; and the Kingdom of Dhasson, where all but the Crone are worshipped, and the King here is related to the royals in Margolan.
Personality: Despite once being happy to blend into the background and avoid the public eye, to avoid the pressure of being a royal, Tris has had to grow into a man not only worthy of the throne but also capable to unseat his brother. Before Jared usurped the throne, Tris never had any aspirations to become king, but following the deaths of his parents and sister, this changed.
Tris is willing to do whatever needs to be done to gain the strength and knowledge required to take back his country. His will is such that he is even willing to sacrifice himself in order to save not only his country and the world itself. He understands that it would be better for him to die in the dangerous training he has subjected himself to than to face Arontala and be defeated, leaving his body and power to the Obsidian King.
To this end, Tris is exceptionally brave and equally determined. He has had the bravery to face down a forest of malevolent ghosts, and also to face the spirit of King Argus to win Mageslayer, something that no other had returned from alive. Tris’s bravery isn’t something that has recently developed; when growing up, he was able to stand up to his brother who frequently attacked and raped servants in the castle, despite knowing that physically he was no match for him and so endured many beatings. But it wasn’t bravery that drove him to learn more about the gifts he found himself with.
Never too proud to face up to his fear and lack of control of his magic, Tris was initially scared by his power and even more so, his lack of control over them. Out of fear of turning his friends and allies away from him, he entertained thoughts of hiding his magic from them, but he didn’t want to keep secrets and came clear. It wasn’t until meeting Carina and Alyssa and later the mages of the Sisterhood, that he found someone he could ask for help with his magic, and growing more confident with his magic helped him to get over his fear. During his training, Tris showed his nature when forced to chose between revenge and justice – had he chosen to follow his desire for revenge, it would have allowed his magic to twist him into a dark mage, something he couldn’t bear the thought of. Tris also knew his knowledge of battle and wars was not sufficient and he wasn’t too proud to ask allies for help in those areas.
It is the training he requires that has pushed his normally patient nature. Tris is able to exhibit patience with people and situations, but his desperation to unlock his powers and control them has often tried his patience. Since being told by his Grandmother’s spirit that she had locked his memories of his training away, he has been desperate to unlock them, and before receiving the help from the Sisterhood, he delved into his dreams and meditated a lot to try to unlock them. But he is understanding and he knows that his training will take time that he doesn’t have – his determination drives him to work tirelessly day and night to become what he needs to be.
Tris is a deeply caring person. He self-appointed himself his sister’s protector after she was born, keeping her safe from their brother mostly, and even after her death his love and care for her helps to keep him going. Tris also cares so much for his friends that he is willing to fight and even sacrifice himself to see them safe. He even offered to summon Vahanian’s dead wife to help him reconcile his past. But his love for his friends is one of his biggest weaknesses and can be used against him – in fact, during his training, Arontala attacked his mind with images of his friends tortured, hung and imprisoned if he should fail. The images haunted him and the thoughts of failure sent him into a deep depression that required healing magic to dispel.
At first look, Tris is capable of shouldering heavy burdens. He has a lot of responsibility of his shoulders and deals with it remarkably well, but Tris suffers from almost permanent nightmares and bouts of hopelessness. Alongside those burdens, he is wont to shoulder guilt too; he blames himself for the death of his parents and sister, believing that he could have stopped it if he’d only been more insistent with his father.
Tris has been able to grow into an empathetic and successful leader of those that follow him, even with his limited knowledge of strategy and often feeling like he is grabbing at straws. That said, he can be easily embarrassed or feel unworthy of the affection and loyalty of his allies, particularly when Soterius and Hartuck bent the knee and swore loyalty to him. His empathy also extends to the spirits that he is now the sole caretaker of.
Under many situations, Tris is able to remain calm, but in particular when his magic is out of control or when in crowds, he can become panicked and paranoid. He can also sometimes act without thinking and when blinded by rage may attack his friends before he sees sense.
Though his situation rarely calls for it, Tris does have a sense of humour and can be quite sarcastic and scathing.
BONUS: Upon arrival in Tu Shanshu, Tris will be incredibly confused at being uprooted from his own world and apparently being in a world in between living and dead - a plane he has been to in his own world - not least because the world feels too alive and he can't access the Spirit Plane. He will have a lot of questions that he wants answers to, particularly if anyone knows if being there means he's dead or how to get home and if not, has time back home gone on without him. For some time, he is going to be unsure if it is some trick by Arontala and may keep largely to himself, not taking the words of the kedan for granted.
Also, technology, what.
Appearance: Tris is of medium build and height. His hair is described as being medium length white blonde and is often tied back. Along with his hair, his pale skin and bright green eyes make him very recognisable and it has made hiding from his brother difficult.
Were he still back in the courts at Margolan, Tris would be outfitted in expensive costumes of silk, satin or velvet, however, since he has been on the road, his clothing has been more humble, often home-made with wool and cottons, and topped with leather armour. The clothing he will be arriving in the grey robes of a Summoner over a studded leather cuirass with Mageslayer in a scabbard at his belt.
PB: Kris Lukas
Abilities: Tris inherited his Grandmother's powerful spirit magic and is a Summoner, a type of mage that can intercede between the living, dead and undead. Tris is a hugely powerful mage, but in order to protect him, his grandmother sealed the memories of much of the training she gave him. Through the teaching of others during his travels, he has learned some skills.
Scrying: Tris is able to scry using a crystal ball. However, it is a skill he has only used once before successfully as Arontala was able to find and magically attack him, so it was deemed safer for him to not.
Spirit Magic: Using his spirit magic, Tris is able to conjure protective sheilds and raise wards. He also has a fraction of control over the elements, although throughout the first book this skill is mostly exhibited as an ability to create fire both realistic and magical. He is also able to combat other magic sources in a more physical sense, at one point using his own magical energy to push back the essence of Arontala through a scrying orb.
Mage Vision/Senses: Tris's mage vision allows him to see the Plane of Spirits as well as shields and wards erected by others. He is also able to sense the shift in the nature of magic presences and wards.
Summoner: Tris has always been able to see ghosts, though he once believed it was only the palace ghosts he could see. However, as a summoner, Tris is not only able to see spirits but he can summon them and perform a passing over ritual to allow those still bound to the land to pass on to the next world. This is a rare gift in his time and he is currently the only Summoner in the world currently. Tris is also able to visualise the spirit plane within his mind, including being able to see and interact with the glowing blue threads that are the manifestation of souls; this allows him to prolong a life as well as to remove foreign souls during possessions, he also used this ability to coil his own spirit around that of a ghost he was battling. However, he is not allowed to hold a soul to a body if it is not willing, nor is he allowed to bind a dissociated spirit to a body. As a Summoner, Tris is able to exhibit a level of control over spirits and bind them to his will or bargain with them.
All of Tris's abilities can be enhanced by his sword Mageslayer, which can also nullify some effects of foreign magics, curses and poisons. His magic can also be blocked by a poison known as Wormroot.
Outwith his magical abilities, Tris is able to make simple healing poultices and potions.
Also, Tris has been trained to use a sword. Initially, his skill came from what he was taught in Shekerishet, but his style has been supplemented by Vahanian's teachings as they travelled, so that he can now apply his skills in a real situation and not just during training. He has also been taught to incorporate some martial arts, including the Eastmark kick, into his fighting style, making him a fairly skilled skirmisher.
That said, his stamina still requires work and particularly when combining magic with melee fighting, Tris can tire quickly.
Inventory: The clothes on his back and his sword, Mageslayer.
Suite: One floor in Earth District. This district is most like the architecture and environment that Tris would be used to and so having a living quarter there would be less jarring. One floor because no matter how much travelling he's done, he's not been out of the castle long and isn't quite so great at general housekeeping.

Third Person: Tris was, in a word, unnerved.
Only a few candlemarks past, he had been in the Sisterhood’s fortress within Principality with Sister Taru, who had healed his mind of the depression that had descended upon him after waking days following his encounter with Arontala.
Taru had left the room after their discussion, leaving him to his thoughts and to his rest. Then in a jarring turn of events, he was suddenly being pulled out of an ocean. It made no sense and yet even without being able to stretch out his mage senses, still dulled by the wormroot, he knew it was real.
What Tris found hard to believe, was what the people who had pulled him out – the kedan – had told him. It unsettled him: scared him even. Even as they travelled into the city and the effects of the wormroot finally began to dim, he still couldn’t begin to grasp what he had been told as the truth. If this realm he had woken in was truly a plane between living, death and dreaming, he should have been able to sense it, to feel the change in the magic around him. And yet he couldn’t feel a thing. It felt normal and at the same time all together strange.
Tris knew that wherever he was, it wasn’t the Spirit Plane of his own world, nor had it been the Shadow Sea that he’d been pulled out of. The only conclusion he could come to was that he was no longer in any world he knew. And it was that that unnerved him.
Left alone in the accommodation the kedan had brought him to, he sat on the edge of the bed and felt a different kind of fear came over him. If he was here, what did that mean for the people back home? Was the room he had been in now laying empty? Had he abandoned his friends and the world, leaving it to the hands of Arontala and the Obsidian King?
Standing up, he headed to the strange device – the console – and sat down in front of it. The kedan had avoided his questions but perhaps there were others who could help him...
Network: Video;
[It's possible that Tris is sitting far too close to the camera as he shuffles uncomfortably in his seat. When he finally sits back, the face of a handsome young man, with tied back white-blond hair fills the screen.]
They explained this to me, but it's unlike anything I've ever seen. I... Those people told me a lot, but I'm unsure what to believe. Am I dead? Is that what this is?
[His face falls, brows pulling into a frown. For a moment he's silent and then he looks back into the camera.] Does anyone recognise the name Vahanian? Or Kiara Sharsequin?
